Former men's cross country and track and field standout J.D. Smith was named to the IU Indy Athletics Hall of Fame in the Class of 2026, highlighting his standout career as one of the best all around athletes in program history. Smith, a Carmel-native, was a two-time All-Summit League performer in cross country and was an Academic All-Summit League selection in 2012.

He was the program's first-ever competitor in field events, competing in the javelin throw in addition to distance running. He finished his career ranked among the program's top performers in both the 3,000m steeplechase and javelin throw.

Academically, Smith was twice named among IUPUI's Top 100 students, awarded each spring to the top students who demonstrate excellence in three categories—academic excellence, campus leadership, and community engagement.
