The 2002-03 basketball team earned the program's lone NCAA Tournament trip at the Division I level, capped by a historic buzzer-beating win over Valparaiso in the Mid-Continent Conference Tournament in Kansas City that season. Led by head coach Ron Hunter, that group finished with a 20-14 record and 10-4 mark in Mid-Con play. The Jaguars defeated a Big Ten (Northwestern) opponent and suffered another near miss at Michigan early during the non-conference portion of the schedule. Hall of Famer Odell Bradley led the squad in scoring (14.2 ppg) while Josh Murray (7.8 rpg) was the team's top rebounder.

The remainder of the usual starting five included Josh Mullins (12.2 ppg), Matt Crenshaw (8.1 ppg) and Chris Sanders (11.1 ppg) while Antoine Lewis (6.8 ppg) and Marcus May (5.1 ppg) were among the league's top reserves. The group becomes the third basketball team to earn Hall of Fame induction, joining the 1972 and 1972-73 groups.
