IU Indianapolis Athletics Hall of Fame
Bob Woodford (1973-77) earns Hall of Fame honors after his prolific basketball career left him as the first 1,000 point scorer in IUPUI history. Woodford was the second four-year letterwinner in any sport and totaled 1,103 points for the Metros from 1973-77. He was the first player in school history to finish with a double-figure scoring average. His recruitment from nearby George Washington High School is noted as giving the early program instant credibility as Woodford ranked among the team leaders in rebounding and assists throughout his career. His 11 assists in a 1975 game against Oakland City still rank among the top 10 single-game totals all-time, while his 11-of-11 free throw shooting performance against Grand Valley State in 1973 is still the best single-game effort ever by a freshman. It remains one of just 10 perfect free throw shooting performances in program history.
In 1977, he was the second-ever recipient of the C.J. Roach Award, given annually to the top performing basketball student-athlete. The award was later renamed the Mel Garland Award after the late former basketball coach/athletics director of the IUPUI program. Woodford becomes the 13th Hall of Fame honoree from the IUPUI men’s basketball program.
