THE PERSON BEHIND IT ALL: LUKE SHAPPELL AND HIS UNWAVERING CHARACTER

INDIANAPOLIS - As IU Indianapolis' Luke Shappell pins his number to his jersey, he goes out to compete with hopes of setting a new standard of possibility for himself. The name Shappell was not absent from the headlines of the 2026 Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships. The junior saw himself on the highest point of the podium, finishing first in the mile, outlasting both heats, with a time of 4:10.78.

Belief was the only option as Shappell was given the baton for the final time in the distance medley relay. His team sat in third-place, but as he rounded every corner, each stride got faster, and Shappell found himself closing the gap, fighting for every inch, and inevitably gaining the edge over Purdue Fort Wayne to claim the first-place win and a program record-setting time of 9:56.04. Shappell's athletic ability and competitive nature are undeniable, but what seems to set him apart isn't his record-setting performances; rather, it is his ever-present smile and the person behind it all.

Head Coach Justin Amburgy said, "Luke consistently supports his teammates and shows respect to competitors, and that kind of character translates directly into the consistency and success he's had in competition."

Shappell offers his opponents sportsmanship, but he also presents them with something much more: friendship. Shappell is no stranger to breaking the tape first, but as he crosses the line, whether it's first or last, Shappell will turn to his friend in the opposing jersey and celebrate alongside them, redefining what it means to be a competitor.

"I'm there to compete when we go to the Horizon League Championships, but that doesn't mean we can't have fun." Shappell continued. "I think it's better if you have camaraderie with your opponents because then, no matter what the result is, you can still celebrate."

As Shappell broke the school record in the distance medley relay and brought home first in the mile, he never forgot about the friends he'd made along the way. He made sure to be there with hands up in celebration as his competition made their last strides to the finish line.

Actions speak louder than words within the IU Indianapolis huddle, as Shappell creates the standard, not with his loud speeches but with his simple actions and his choice to consistently show up. His character embodies exactly what it means to be a leader, and with a young team under his wing, Shappell leads with his smile at the forefront.

"With such a young team, having someone who consistently shows up ready to work and sets the standard every day has been extremely important to our group." Coach Amburgy continued. "His consistency and attitude in training naturally set the tone for the younger athletes."

Growing up, Shappell could be found participating in every sport invented, including football, soccer, tennis, basketball, and even baseball. Track and cross country were never part of the equation. But one day, Shappell stumbled upon a small YMCA flyer that invited a chance to be a part of the cross country team. After participating in every sport possible, Shappell decided to add another one to his repertoire, and he ran with it.

"They came in with flyers about the YMCA cross country team." Shappell continued. "And so I signed up for it, and it turns out I was pretty fast. So that's where it all kind of started."

Throughout his junior and senior years of high school, Shappell continued with his athletic pursuits in other sports. There was never a dull season, as the fall held hopes of cross country, the winter welcomed basketball, and the spring marked the beginning of track. For Shappell, it wasn't just about staying in shape; it was about the people he met within each huddle.

Shappell recalled, "I could meet new people. My teammates from cross country and track were completely different from my teammates from basketball, which I love."

As Shappell embarks on his outdoor season, school records and regional hopes set the foundation for his fight. His successful indoor season has created momentum for Shappell, as he has realized all that is possible.

"To bring that DMR record was actually a huge surprise, but a welcomed one." Shappell continued. "I knew I was fast before, but it gives me a lot of confidence going into the outdoor season. Hopefully, I can build off of that and go really fast in the 1500m and make regionals."

And with that, he'll continue to make a name for himself. As he crosses each finish line and stands on each podium, his smile will lead the way. But before all the success, he will congratulate his friends in the opposing jerseys, not because he has to, but because it is simply who he is.
