ROCHESTER, Mich. - IU Indianapolis standout Luke Shappell sent both hands skyward in what's become his trademark celebration as he repeated as Horizon League champion in the 1,500m event on the final day of the league's Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Sunday (May 10). Shappell's victory highlighted the Jaguars' final day efforts as IU Indy closed the meet with 35 points in an eighth-place finish.

Shappell immediately went to the front of the pack in the 1,500m event, trailed closely by Purdue Fort Wayne's Sam Dunnett and teammate Riley Nixon. The trio went 1-2-3 up until the final bell with Shappell continuing the fend off Dunnett in ultimately a school record time of 3:45.37. Nixon got nipped at the finish line in a fourth-place finish, just missing a personal best as he crossed at 3:47.91. Freshman Eli Oetken just missed scoring, placing eighth at 3:56.95.

Later, sophomore Nick Cook posted a fifth-place finish in the 800m event with a time of 1:52.76, surging from the back of the pack at the halfway point of the race to pick off three opponents over the final lap.

In the 5,000m event, Nixon, Oetken and Shappell represented the Jaguars in the faster of the two races with Nixon placing fifth at 14:30.66. Shappell, who led the opening five laps of the race, ultimately placed seventh at 14:36.20. Sophomore Joey LaPatra was the team's top finisher in the slower of the two races, finishing at 15:10.44 to finish fourth in his race.

The Jaguars tacked on some points in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays to bookend the meet. The group of Carter Schorr, Nolan King, Alec Hueftle and Matt Mitsch opened the day with a seventh-place finish in the 4x100 relay. Hueftle, Jay Pillai, Evan Farmer and Cook ended the day with a time of 3:27.80, also claiming a seventh-place finish.
