YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - IU Indianapolis men's track standout
Luke Shappell continued his banner indoor championship on Sunday (Mar. 1), claiming an individual win in the mile to highlight the team's final day efforts. Shappell used his trademark kick to outpace the competition for the individual tape.
Shappell, who anchored the Jaguars' distance medley relay team to a win the night prior, crossed in a time of 4:10.78 in a tightly bunched finish that had five runners all within a second of one another. Sophomore
Riley Nixon followed in line with a runner-up finish time of 4:11.16 as the Jags owned the top two spots on the podium. Freshman
Eli Oetken was the Jaguars' next finisher at 4:19.16 while
Joey Ashman closed at 4:22.12.
In the 800-meter finals,
Jaydon Steidinger earned a sixth-place finish with a time of 1:56.64 while Ashman, the top seed from the prelims, finished eighth overall.
The 3,000-meter race was a blend of distance runners doubling back from the previous night's 5,000-meter race and mid-distance runners making their second or third entry of the weekend. Nixon was the team's top finisher in a time of 8:24.38, finishing just off the podium in ninth-place overall.
Joey LaPatra clocked a personal best time of 8:28.99 and
Alec Hueftle ran a personal best time of 8:33.54. Other Jaguars who recorded personal best times included
Zach Risner (8:38.15) and
Nolan King (8:39.96). Shappell was up with the leaders for the opening half of the race before falling back due to heavy legs and ultimately failing to finish.
The Jags capped the evening with an eighth-place finish in the 4x400 relay as
Liam Lilly,
Jay Pillai, Steidinger and
Evan Farmer posted a time of 3:29.92.
IU Indy finished with 35 points in the team standings, despite competing in just four individual events and two relays.
