LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Freshman James Kuisel continued his impressive rookie campaign on Saturday (Apr. 9) as he lowered his own school record in the 400m event at the Jim Vargo Invitational, hosted by Bellarmine. Kuisel cruised to a win in his heat and crossed the finish line in a time of 51.03 seconds, taking a quarter second off his own school record.

"The cold and rainy weekend concluded with J.J. breaking his 400m school record and winning his section despite the 14 mile per hour headwinds," head coach Justin Roeder said. "I'm pleased with the progression of the program as they continue to develop their racing skills which will pay off in a few weeks at outdoor conference championships."

Kuisel's effort capped an already successful weekend for the Jaguars on day one at the Vargo Invite. Eric Hoffman led IUPUI's entries in the 1,500 on Friday night while Justin Amburgy was tops among the Jaguars' first 10K of the season.

"I'm very pleased with this weekend's performances, considering the wind, rain and cold temperatures, which do not allow quick times," Roeder said. "Hoffman and (Will) Clark continue their consistency this outdoor season in the 1,500m  as they tune up for the Bryan Clay 5K next week.

"Amburgy and Conor Fagan ran awesome. These two put in the work day after day for the past several years, so it's great to see them showcase their fitness as they both finished high in their sections."

IUPUI will return to action this week when selected Jaguars head to California to face elite competition.
