YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – IUPUI softball will begin its first year in Horizon League play with a three-game set at Youngstown State on Saturday (March 24) and Sunday (March 25).
Dut to weather in Youngstown, IUPUI will take on Youngstown State in a double header on Saturday, beginning a 1 p.m. and a single game on Sunday at 2 p.m. All of the games are scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN3.
IUPUI (4-15) will look to snap a seven-game losing streak after losing all four games it played in Nashville last weekend against Bowling Green and Lipscomb.
The IUPUI offense has struggled recently, now hitting .221 as a team.
Mandy Dallas is the leading hitter for the Jags, hitting .320 with three doubles and the only two home runs hit by a Jaguar this season.
Adison Lorsung is the leading run producer with 10 RBI and is tied for the team lead with
Haley Ginger with four doubles. The Jags haven't run much but have been successful on the base paths, stealing 15 bases on 18 attempts.
Megan Overton is the top pitcher for IUPUI this season, owning a 2.78 ERA and a 3-7 record. In 58 innings pitched, Overton has 42 strikeouts and is allowing opposing batters to hit .261.
Dezirae Leonard has seen the bulk of the rest of the action in the circle, throwing 51.1 innings and has a 1-7 record and 5.18 ERA over 10 starts. Leonard is allowing a .315 opposing batting average.
SCOUTING YOUNGSTOWN STATE
Youngstown State comes in to the weekend with an 8-12 overall record and won its last three games, beating UNC Wilmington twice and North Carolina A&T once. The Penguins were picked to finish second in the Horizon League Preseason Poll.
The Penguins are the top hitting team in the Horizon League so far, with a .306 team batting average and have driven in a league-high 86 runs. Two players are hitting over .400 this year with Lexi Zappitelli at .483 and Yazmine Romero hitting .448. Four Penguins have double-digit RBI, led by Maddi Lusk with 15.
In the circle, Youngstown State has the third-highest ERA in the league at 5.26. The best ERA on the team is Paige Geanangel who holds a 4.87 ERA and is 4-6 on the season.
ALL TIME SERIES
The Jags are 13-7 all-time against Youngstown State, winning the last three meetings. The last time the two squads met was in 2015 when the Jags swept a double header, winning game one 4-0 and taking game two 9-4.
