LOUISVILLE, Ky. – With just a pair of tournaments left prior to the start of Summit League play, the IUPUI softball team (5-15) is scheduled to play four games at the Louisville Classic Tournament this weekend (March 10-11), with the Jags opening up the slate against the home team. IUPUI has already competed in four tournaments with the Jaguars earning a pair of rune-rule victories in the early going.
On the season, the Jags are led by the right-handed bat of first baseman
Maggie Good, who has swung a .368 average with a Summit League leading 22 runs batted in (RBIs) with five homeruns.
Alyssa Matson continues to enjoy a breakout senior campaign with a .361 average and six doubles, while third baseman
Taylor Chitwood is fourth in the league with 13 RBIs. The Jags have a team .262 average.
The host team Cardinals will match up with the Jags first on Friday (March 10) at 3 p.m. EST. Louisville carries a 12-7 record this season, winning five of their last six games including a 4-1 record at the Red and Black Tournament. The Cardinals have a team .300 batting average and have enjoyed stellar pitching, posting a team 1.79 earned run average (ERA). The only weakness currently in the Louisville lineup has been defense at times, as the team has committed 33 errors through 19 games, allowing 29 unearned runs to come in and score.
The Northern Iowa Panthers will be the Jags second opponent Friday, as head coach
Heather Tarter will face her alma mater for the first time. The Panthers have a 10-8 record this season, and are winners in three of their last five games. The team has knocked 13 homeruns in 18 games, and has posted a team 2.60 ERA. UNI finished the 2016 season with a 38-19 record while going 16-10 in the Missouri Valley Conference.
The Jags will follow with a doubleheader Saturday, starting with the Ohio Bobcats followed by the Wright State Raiders. IUPUI already faced Wright State in the Western Kentucky Spring Fling in Bowling Green, Kentucky, as the Jags picked up a 6-1 victory. Good hit her first of two grand slams on the season in that game, as the entirety of the Jaguar offense came across in the first two innings.
