SOFTBALL SET FOR SPRING FLING IN BOWLING GREEN

The Jags have won two of their last three games and will look to add to it in the Western Kentucky-hosted tournament.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Heading into their third tournament of the early season, the IUPUI softball team (2-8) will venture south to the Western Kentucky Spring Fling set to take place Feb. 24-26.  The Jags were winners of two of their last three games at the Chattanooga Challenge and will look to continue their winning ways against a slate of Midwestern foes.

The Jags will open the bill against Indiana State Friday (Feb. 24) at 1 p.m. EST, followed by a doubleheader with Illinois State (11 a.m.) and host Western Kentucky (1:30 p.m.) Saturday (Feb. 25).  They'll cap the weekend with a pair of games against Wright State (11 a.m.) and Austin Peay (1:30 p.m.) Sunday (Feb. 26).

IUPUI enjoyed its first win of the season on Feb. 18, as the Jags run-ruled UT-Chattanooga in a 14-3 beating that marked the first victory for first-year head coach Heather Tarter.  The team followed it up with a dramatic walk-off 5-3 win the following day against Tennessee Tech, as Maggie Armstrong came through with seventh inning heroics that saved the day.

On the season, Alyssa Matson leads the team with a .455 average, socking five doubles and collecting eight runs out of the leadoff spot.  Taylor Chitwood is swinging .290 with a strong .613 slugging percentage, as she has five extra base hits (two doubles, one triple, two homeruns) through ten games while leading the team with 10 RBIs.

Pitching has been an early point of concern for the Jags, as the team owns a combined 7.00 ERA.  Despite that, Jaguar pitchers have tossed four complete games, and Nickole Finch has shown signs of improvement in picking up a pair of victories this past weekend.  She leads the team with 24 strikeouts in 31.2 innings of work.

Defensively, IUPUI is looking to clean up from earlier performances, as the team has committed 13 errors through 10 games, owning a .954 fielding percentage.  15 runs this season given up by IUPUI have been unearned.  Despite that, first-year catcher Sabrina Trevino has been a strong spot in the defense, as the new backstop has surrendered just a single pass ball through 10 contests.  Matson owns a perfect fielding percentage with 17 assists and 10 putouts, while Armstrong and Mandy Dallas have split time at first, with the duo going errorless and combining for 63 putouts.

Live stats will be available for all of the games on IUPUIJags.com, with daily recaps posted following the completion of competition.
