DENVER, Colo. – Perhaps the penultimate moment of the season, the IUPUI volleyball team (12-19, 8-8) will head to the mile-high city to take part in the 2016 Summit League Tournament, hosted by the reigning Summit League Champion Denver Pioneers. The three-day event (Nov. 18-20) will feature the top six teams in the Summit League, with IUPUI slated to take on third-seeded North Dakota State (13-17, 11-5) Friday (Nov. 18) at 9:30 p.m. EST. The Jags are the sixth-seeded team in the tournament.
Festivities will begin for the Jags Thursday night (Nov. 17) at the Summit League banquet, where players will be announced for the first and second All-Summit League teams, as well as individual player and coach awards. Results of the banquet will be available following the announcements on IUPUIJags.com.
This season, the Jags have been led by
Kori Waelbroeck, who has amassed 376 kills and averages 3.55 kills-per-set.
Gabby Fisher finished second, picking up 335 kills and 327 digs, while
Alexis Mapes led the team with 1,046 assists.
Abby Boatman has racked up 106 total blocks this year, tying
Logan Walling for the sixth-most in a single season at IUPUI. Walling has 95 total blocks with a Summit League-leading 26 solo, the second-most ever in a single season in program history. At 74 solo blocks for her career, she is just two shy of tying the all-time mark, set by two-time All-American
Kaitlyn Hickey in 2015. Walling already set the program record for most total blocks, currently at 424 for her career.
An often up-and-down season, the Jags have both enjoyed the fruits of a five-match winning streak while also being soured by burden of a five-match losing streak this year. Playing through arguably the toughest preseason schedule in the Summit League, the Jags faced seven top-50 ranked opponents according to the ratings percentage index (RPI), as well as two teams currently ranked in the top-25 in the AVCA Coaches' Poll (Ohio State and Dayton). 10 total opponents from this season are ranked in the top-100 RPI, which includes 79th-ranked Green Bay, whom the Jags topped in five sets (Sep. 9). At 8-8 in Summit League play, the Jags previously had risen to as high as the third overall team in Summit League standings, falling no lower than sixth.
Pitted against North Dakota State in the quarterfinals, the Jags were swept in straight-sets in both meetings with the Bison this season. The first meeting was a tightly contested battle, as NDSU took sets one and three by margins of four and five points, respectively. All-time, the Jags are 7-15 against North Dakota State, last topping the Bison in four sets at home on Oct. 10, 2015. That match marked the last of a seven-match win streak the Jags had going against NDSU, dating back to the 2012 season. With the pair of losses this season, the Jags are 0-3 in their last three meetings with the Bison.
Prior to their regular season finale, the Bison had a six-match winning streak, which included victories over Western Illinois, Omaha, South Dakota State, Fort Wayne, IUPUI and second-seeded South Dakota. They lost their final match to Denver, who earned the top seed for the tournament on the last day. Last season, North Dakota State was ousted in the first round of the tournament, falling to South Dakota in five sets.
The winner between IUPUI and North Dakota State will face South Dakota at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday (Nov. 19).
