MEN'S TENNIS FALLS JUST SHORT, LOSES 4-3

Five of six singles matches, including the decisive 6th-singles match, go to three sets

1/19/2014 12:22:00 AM

Edwardsville, Ill. – The Jaguars had their hands full Saturday afternoon after a dominating win on Friday. Despite the return of Jason Jaruvang to the first singles spot, IUPUI suffered a 4-3 loss to the Cougars that included five three-set matches.

Expectations are high this year after Jaruvang's school-record 28-win season in 2013. He got off to a rough start though missing the first match of the spring season and falling in three sets in his season debut. After losing the opening set, he was able to force a second-set tiebreaker and pulled away winning 7-3, but couldn't finish off the match.

With Jaruvang's return to the lineup, Alex Toliver was bumped down to the second spot where he continued his impressive start to the season with a straightforward 6-3, 6-3 victory.

Thomas Gans remained in the third spot with Jake Hedderig sitting this one out. Gans won his match in three sets that went all the way to a third-set breaker.

The only other change in the lineup today was a swap in the four and five positions between Jacob Bradley and Patrick O'Neill.

After getting swept in doubles and losing the opening point of the match, the Jaguars needed to win four singles matches to take the victory. With five matches completed and only Akshay Verma in the sixth spot remaining on the court, both sides were tied at three. Verma lost the opening set and forced a second-set breaker, which he won 7-2, but ultimately couldn't hold on and fell 4-6, 6-5 (2), 6-2.

"We lost 4-3. It came down to the last match on at six singles," said head coach Brandon Currie. "It was a very competitive match with a total of five three-setters. Hopefully the guys will rebound and be ready for a big match with Saint Louis tomorrow."

The loss puts the Jaguars at 1-1 this season, but they'll have an opportunity tomorrow to jump right back above .500. Their match in St. Louis starts at 10 a.m. and will be their third in three days.
