OMAHA, Neb. – A match-high 13 kills and 16 digs from
Kaitlyn Hickey led the IUPUI volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep (25-14, 25-16, 25-15) over the Omaha Mavericks Friday evening at Sapp Fieldhouse, securing the Jaguars' eighth consecutive Summit League victory.
The win moved IUPUI to 14-12 overall and 8-2 in the league, while Omaha fell to 6-18 and 1-8 in the conference.
Hickey was the only player to register double-figure kills on the evening, but her effectiveness was due in part to
Kortni Wright,
Kelly Wachtel and
Meredith Farkas each hitting above .350.
"I think our defense did a good job of slowing them down, which gave our offense some good opportunities," head coach
Steve Payne said. "Alexis [Meeks] did a good job of moving the ball again and that gave our hitters chances to put the ball away."
Alexis Meeks finished with 31 assists and orchestrated the Jags offense to 41 kills at a .330 clip.
"Being on the road, I thought we did a good job of staying with them point-for-point until we were able to put together a few rallies allowing us to get the win."
In the opening set, the score was tied at 9-9 until kills from Hickey and
Logan Walling coupled with three Mavericks attack errors opened a 14-9 IUPUI advantage. With the lead at six, 20-14, the Jaguars used kills from four different players, including one from
Skylar Wright, and a block from Kortni Wright and
Moriah Fair to cap a five-point surge and finish off a 25-14 opening-set win.
The same held true in set two as the score was tied at 10-10 until a UNO attack error was sandwiched in between a kill and an ace from Hickey resulting in IUPUI taking a 13-10 lead. Two kills and an ace from Farkas helped the Jaguars double up that lead at 20-14, and from there, Hickey registered two more kills and a solo block to help IUPUI close out a 25-16 set-two win.
The trend continued in set three as the score was tied at 11 until the Jaguars managed to score seven of the next eight points to push their lead to 18-12. Kills from Wachtel, Farkas and Hickey helped the cushion grow to seven at 22-15, forcing Omaha to burn a timeout. Following the brief break, two more Hickey kills and an Omaha ball handling error cemented a 25-15 third-set win for the Jags.
The Jaguars will now make their way to Macomb, Ill., on Sunday, Nov. 3, when they will put their eight-match Summit League winning streak on the line against Western Illinois. The match is set to begin at 4 p.m. EDT.
