OMAHA, Neb. – The IUPUI volleyball team takes its seven-match Summit League winning streak on the road this weekend when it travels to Omaha, Neb., to take on the Omaha Mavericks on Friday, Nov. 1, before making its way to Macomb, Ill., to face Western Illinois on Sunday, Nov. 3.
Last weekend, the Jaguars picked up a weekend sweep over Denver and South Dakota to improve to 7-2 in the conference, and with the Coyotes and Pioneers also dropping contests at Fort Wayne, The Jags moved into a tie with USD for first place in the conference while Denver slipped into third place.
"We played some good volleyball last weekend and came away with two big wins, but that's in the past," head coach
Steve Payne said. "It's always tough playing on the road. We will need to play some of our best volleyball if we want to keep our momentum going."
The Jags enter the week above .500 for the first time this season as wins last weekend over the Coyotes and the Pioneers moved IUPUI's overall record to 13-12.
Moriah Fair and
Kaitlyn Hickey continue to lead the offensive attack and both rank in the Top 5 in the league averaging 3.97 kps and 3.59 kps, respectively, but
Kelly Wachtel has risen to 10th in the league in kills averaging 3.00 kps in league-only matches. Defensively, Beth Howard still leads the league in digs per set (4.78), and her 5.13 dps average last week was good enough to pick up her second consecutive Summit League Defensive Player of the Week honor.
The Mavericks come in at 6-17 overall and 1-7 in the league after a three-set defeat at the hands of Western Illinois last weekend. Kelley Wollak leads the team in kills averaging 2.51 kps, while Morgan Schmale is one of the top blockers in the league averaging 1.15 bps.
The Leathernecks are coming off a three-set sweep over Omaha last weekend to improve to 10-13 overall and 4-4 in the conference. Western Illinois currently stands in fifth place in the conference, and they are led offensively by Samantha Fournier's 4.29 kills per set in league-only matches. The Leathernecks are 4-0 at home this season with all four of their victories coming in three sets.
