INDIANAPOLIS – The Summit League portion of the schedule begins this weekend when the IUPUI volleyball team welcomes UMKC and South Dakota to The Jungle for matches on Friday, Sept. 14 and Saturday, Sept. 15, respectively. Friday's match is set to begin at 7 p.m., while Saturday's action kicks off at 5 p.m.

IUPUI comes in winning just one of its last four matches, including going 1-2 last weekend at the Western Kentucky Invitational, but despite the losses in Bowling Green, Ky., the Jags played well against strong competition and look to get off to a good start in conference play in front of their home crowd this weekend.

"This weekend starts a new season for us," said head coach Steve Payne. "As of late we have played some good volleyball at times but we haven't put it together for a whole match. Hopefully we can learn from those experiences and put together two strong performances this weekend against two good teams."

Over the past seven games, Kelsey Hoefer has been one of IUPUI's go-to options offensively averaging close to 3.00 kps resulting in her being named to the IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational All-Tournament Team on Sept. 1 and the WKU Invitational Team on Sept. 8.

Heading into the weekend, Moriah Fair leads the team in kills averaging 3.08 kps on the season, while Hoefer (2.72 kps), Kaitlyn Hickey (2.50 kps) and Bethany Fogler (2.05 kps) are the other Jags players putting down over 2.00 kps.

Defensively, four players are corralling more than 3.00 dps led by Beth Howard's 4.28 dps, and in the front row, Fogler averages a team-best 1.08 bps.

ABOUT UMKC

The Kangaroos own a 7-5 record coming into their Summit League opener after picking up two wins in three matches last weekend at the Gardner-Webb Invitational.

UMKC possesses a balanced offensive attack with seven players averaging more than 1.50 kps, led by Emily Lucas' 2.45 kps. One of the main strengths for UMKC has been its serve-receive. The 'Roos collectively serve up 1.32 aces per set, while giving up less than one on average at 0.84. Taryn Miller leads the team in service aces with 13.

The Jags are 14-10 all-time against UMKC and have won three of the last four meetings, but the Kangaroos won the last meeting, 3-2, at The Jungle on Oct. 28.

ABOUT SOUTH DAKOTA

The Coyotes come in with a 6-5 record and begin their second season of conference play this weekend after playing their inaugural season in the league a year ago.

Offensively, USD is paced by Kendall Kritenbrink's 3.86 kps, which ranks third in the Summit League. As a group, the Coyotes have accumulated a league-best 61 service aces.

IUPUI is 2-0 all-time against South Dakota after sweeping the season series last year.
