VOLLEYBALL CRUISES TO 3-0 WIN OVER CHICAGO STATE

IUPUI will face USC-Upstate and Bradley on Saturday

PEORIA, Ill. -- Playing their second match of the day, the IUPUI volleyball team had no trouble picking up their second win of the Hotels at Grand Prairie Invitational, breezing past Chicago State, 3-0, on Friday afternoon at the Markin Center.  The Jaguars trailed only briefly in the match, which they won, 25-12, 25-16, 25-13.

IUPUI (2-0) used a balanced attack in hitting .362 for the match, recording 46 kills after striking 50 in their morning match.  Kalyse Reimbold led the Jaguars, finishing with 10 kills.  Six Jaguars, including Reimbold, had 5 or more kills - Monica Suding had 6, while Lindsey Weber, Dana Gardner, Lauran Thompson and Jessica Phelps each had 5.

Defensively, the Jaguars were stout once again, limiting Chicago State (0-1) to 22 kills.  Shari Bernhardt led the Jags in digging again, finishing with 12 digs.  Thompson picked up 11 digs to match Danielle Goodnight, who recorded her second straight double-double with 31 assists to go along with 11 digs.

The Jaguars ran away with the match early on, as Chicago State managed just one tie in the entire match.  In the opening set, IUPUI used a 10-0 run to open a 19-8 lead; within the run were three aces on the serve of Bernhardt.  A Reimbold kill closed the set, giving IUPUI an early 1-0 lead in the match.

Chicago State responded by taking an early 9-5 lead in the second set, prompting IUPUI coach Steve Payne to call a timeout.  The Jaguars worked their way back into the match, using two more aces from Bernhardt and two Gardner kills to knot the match at 12.

From there, IUPUI went on a 5-1 run to force a CSU timeout.  Kills by Gardner and Phelps helped the Jaguars close the match on a 7-3 spurt after the timeout and take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third set, the Jaguars never trailed, as Chicago State came within two points on one occasion after the first two points of the set.  With the score 9-7, IUPUI rattled off a 12-4 run, including four straight points on the service of Hillary Houston to help close out the match.

IUPUI will be look to pick up their first tournament title since 2005 when they will face off with USC-Upstate, who dropped their opening match of the tournament to Bradley, at 2 p.m. CT on Saturday.  The Jaguars will face off with Bradley at 7 p.m. CT on Saturday.
