INDIANAPOLIS - IU Indianapolis men's track standout
Joey Ashman just missed breaking the school record in the mile as three Jaguars competed at the Crossroads of America Invitational inside the Indiana Farm Bureau Fall Creek Pavilion on Saturday (Jan. 24).
Ashman was the team's top finisher among the three entrants in the mile as the only Jaguars that competed at the two-day meet.
Ashman started near the back of the pack but moved up before making a final pass on the final turn to overtake Kentucky's Eyan Turk for a winning time of 4:08.95. In doing so, he shed three seconds off his previous best time and missed tying the school record by eight-hundredths of a second.
"I got boxed in the first 400, so I knew the time goal was out the window," Ashman said. "From there, I just did what I do best and I raced to win. I came up short of the school record, but I know there's more in the tank for next time."
Behind him, sophomore
Riley Nixon clocked a time of 4:12.70 in the same heat, finishing fifth, and junior
Luke Shappell ran a time of 4:17.97.
The Jags will return to action next weekend, splitting efforts between the Midwest Classic at Fall Creek Pavilion and at Notre Dame's Meyo Invitational.
