Box Score 2 BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The IU Indy softball team split Friday's contests to open the Hoosier Classic. The Jags defeated the UIC Flames in game one of the three-day invitational then dropped their second game of the day to host Indiana.
In the opening game, the Jags defeated the Flames, 7-1. IU Indy started the scoring early with two runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Morgan Gilbert stole home to put the Jags on the board first.
Callie Dickerson then doubled to center field to score
Molly Kable, extended the lead to 2-0.
IU Indy added one run in the second inning with an RBI double from
Pallas Dominion, 3-0.
UIC avoided the shutout with one run in the third inning off a RBI groundout from Hailey Cowing, 3-1.
The Jags extended their lead back to three with a sacrifice fly from
Kinsey Pfeiffer to score
Paige McPhearson in the bottom of the third inning, 4-1.
IU Indy then added three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. With runners on first and third, Gilbert hit a bunt single to the pitcher to allow Dominion to sneak in for the run. Kable then reached on a fielder's choice which scored
Kendal Calvert. Then after a fielding error from the Flames' shortstop, Gilbert scored to seal their lead at 7-1.
The Flames threatened to keep the game alive in the top of the seventh with runners at first and third with two outs, but
Clara Phariss (W, 1-4) forced the pop up to clear the bases and end the game, 7-1.
Gilbert and
Tori Candler led the Jags at the plate with two hits each while five different Jags added an RBI. Gilbert, Kable, Dickerson, Pfeiffer and Dominion all recorded one RBI. IU Indy totaled eight hits with Dickerson, Candler and Dominion all collecting a double in the win.
Phariss took the win in the circle for the Jags, throwing a complete game, giving up just one run on eight hits with four strikeouts.
In game two, the Jags struggled offensively, falling to the Indiana Hoosiers in just five innings, 14-0. IU Indy was unable to record a hit as the Hoosiers tallied 12.
Indiana jumped on the board in the first inning with five runs on just two hits including an inside the park homer from Kinsey Mitchell which scored three. The Hoosiers continued their offensive success with one run in the bottom of the second and one in the third. They doubled their lead to 14-0 with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth frame.
The Jags couldn't compete with the Hoosiers' strong offense, falling in just five innings.
Lily Roush (L, 1-6) took the loss in the circle for IU Indy giving up five runs on two hits with three walks. Dickerson threw three innings, giving up four earned runs with two strikeouts.
The Jags will return to Bloomington tomorrow, March 8 as they face Western Michigan at 10:00 AM and Bowling Green at 12:00 PM.
