FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Freshman
Nick Cook highlighted the final day of the Horizon League Indoor Track & Field Championships for the IU Indianapolis squad, breaking the program's nine-year old mark in the 800m event. Cook, who advanced to Sunday's finals through the Saturday prelims, finished fourth overall at 1:53.59, breaking the previous school record by nearly a half second.
The Jaguars finished the two-day meet tied for sixth in the team standings with 26 points.
"Really proud of the team as they delivered an incredible indoor season, showcasing the depth and talent of our underclassmen," head coach
Justin Roeder said. "There's a lot to highlight, but hats off to the DMR squad securing the Horizon League title and
Nick Cook setting a new school record in the 800.
"All in all, I was really pleased with the progression we saw our athletes make from the beginning to the end of the season. I'm stoked to see how the next training block planned for the team sets them up to make even more jumps in performances as we gear towards outdoor conference."
In the mile, sophomore
Luke Shappell placed fourth overall at 4:15.85 and true freshman
Riley Nixon was sixth at 4:16.07. Another true freshman,
Joey Ashman, was next in line among the team's finishers at 4:26.80.
True freshman
Joey LaPatra was the team's top finisher in the 3,000m event, placing 12th overall at 8:39.92 and Shappell checked in a 8:44.45 to place 20th, capping his busy meet.
Mitchell Gits was next in line at 8:49.24 and followed immediately by
Sam Grimes' time of 8:50.77.
The quartet of
Alec Moor,
Jay Pillai,
Jaydon Steidinger and Cook to run a time of 3:29.48 in the 4x400 relay to close out the meet.
Youngstown State coasted to the team title with 227.5 points while Milwaukee was second at 127 points. Roeder's squad will now turn attention to the outdoor season, beginning later this month.
