INDIANAPOLIS - The IU Indianapolis men's and women's track and field squads will be in action on Saturday (Jan. 18) when they compete at the Hoosier Horsepower Classic inside Fall Creek Pavilion at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.
Fans can purchase tickets and parking for $10 each by
clicking here. Doors to the public will open at 9:30 a.m. with women's weight throw being the first field event at 10:30 a.m. Track events will begin at 11:20 a.m. with the women's 5,000m.
On the men's side, 11 different Jaguars are slated to make their track debuts for head coach
Justin Roeder's squad as IU Indy runners are slated for just three events - the 800m, mile and 3,000m events. Sophomore
Luke Shappell highlights the entrants in the mile, having run 4:11.56 a season ago while
Noah Price comes in having run 4:18.58. Two true freshmen,
Joey Ashman and
Riley Nixon, will join Shappell in the quicker of the two heats. Another true freshman,
Nick Cook, keys the team's entries in the 800m event while veteran
Mitchell Gits is the team's top entry in the 3,000m event. Gits has run 8:23.90 and will compete in the fast heat of the 3K.Â
On the women's side,
Antonio McDaniel's team competes in a more diverse offering of events with Jaguars slated for 10 different events. Junior
Modupe Awosanya ranks among the league's best in the long jump, having jumped 6.22m (20' 5'') earlier in her career. Freshman
Pa'Shence Purnell has been the team's top performer in the 60m hurdles early in the season, having run 9.03 seconds, while Awosanya (7.62) and
Paige Schulte (7.93) top the team entries in the 60m dash.Â
Veteran
Ellie Cates comes in as the program's record holder in the mile, having run 4:56.76, and is also entered alongside
Wini Barnett,
Grace Bragg and
Julianna Crow in the 800m event. Freshman
Jahzara McAlister is the team's fastest entrant in the 200m dash at 25.82 seconds.Â
In the high jump,
Jada-Marie Davis is the school record holder at 1.66m (5' 5.25'') while
Paige Laffoon has jumped 1.63m (5' 4.25'').Â
The day's events are slated to conclude with the 3,000m event as newcomer
Brooke Neal comes in with a time of 10:07.31 to her credit and
Julie Smith has run 10:21.67.Â
