Box Score 2 MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The IUPUI softball team began the Blues City Classic in Memphis with two games today. Indiana State walked it off in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat the Jags in the first game of the day, 3-2. In the second game, IUPUI fell to Butler, 7-2.
In the first game of the day, IUPUI lost to Indiana State in eight innings, 3-2. The Jags jumped on the board first in the top of the first inning after Kendal Calvart tripled to left center then
Morgan Gilbert grounded out to second base to score Calvert. IUPUI extended their lead to 2-0 in the top of the fourth after
Victoria Sivert singled up the middle then
Jaylin Calvert reached on a bunt single followed by a Sycamore error that allowed Sivert to score.
Indiana State got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning with a solo home run from Bella Peterson. Errors proved costly as the Sycamores tied the game up to send it into extra innings in the bottom of the seventh frame after an error allowed Olivia Patton to score from third, 2-2. Another error by the Jags allowed Indiana State to walk it off in the bottom of the eighth, 3-2.
Rachel Gregory went 2-for-3 while
Kendal Calvert, Sivert,
Maicey Bedrick and
Jaylin Calvert all recorded hits in the game.
Madison Bryant took the loss on the mound giving up three runs (one unearned) on three hits with eight strikeouts.
In game two, the Jags fell to Butler, 7-2. IUPUI took the early lead in the bottom of the third frame, 2-0, after Bedrick singled to second to score
Kendal Calvert. Gilbert then scored on an error by the Bulldogs' catcher.
Butler didn't wait long to retaliate. The Bulldogs scored seven runs on seven hits in the top of the fourth inning to take the lead, 7-2.
Bedrick went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Kendal Calvert and Gilbert also recorded hits in the loss.
Carly Metcalf took the loss giving up six runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings of work.
IUPUI will continue the Blues City Classic when they take on Memphis tomorrow (Saturday, March 5) at 3:00 PM ET.
