Day #1 Results
HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - The IUPUI men's golf team is perched sixth among the 11-team field at this week's Orlando Invitational, being played at El Campeon at Mission Inn Golf Resort, just outside of Orlando. The course will be the host site of the 2020 Horizon League Championships and five league teams took advantage of this week's event to get a preview of the track.
Wright State leads the field at 601 (309-292) and Illinois Wesleyan and Youngstown State are tied for second at 611. IUPUI carded rounds of 315 and 313 and is sixth overall at 628.
Youngstown State's Ken Keller is atop the leaderboard at 2-over 146 and WSU's Tyler Goecke is second at 4-over 148. IUPUI senior
Nathan Cunningham is in the hunt, tied for seventh at 7-over 151 (73-78) heading into Tuesday's final round.
"The course did not play easy today - that's for sure. It got really windy in the afternoon round and it had some shots that required a lot of you," Cunningham said. "The first round was solid and I had a strong comeback on the back nine. I got myself out of position a few times on the back nine, which led to too many bogeys. All in all, there are positives and we just have to keep working on the weaknesses.
"This whole semester is a progression towards conference. Tomorrow as a team, we just need a solid attitude and lots of fight. We'll let the end result come."
Cunningham was hot early, getting to 1-under after a stretch of three birdies in four holes midway through his opening round. He added a pair of birdies in his afternoon round as scoring conditions worsened over the course of the day. Cunningham is tied for fourth among the field with seven birdies, one back of the group of three leaders.
Senior
Johnny Hsu ended his day tied for 23rd among the 69-player field at 156 (80-76) and
Keegan McCullough ended his day at 157 (78-79). Senior
Enrico Rissi Miozzo had a countable second round as part of his 167 (87-80) while freshman
Preston Nanthavong was countable in the morning with back-to-back rounds of 84.
Hsu is among the field's top 10 with 22 pars through 36 holes.
Tuesday's play will begin with an 8:15 a.m. shotgun start.
