HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - The IUPUI women's golf team opened the spring schedule on Sunday (Feb. 9) with match play wins over Detroit Mercy and Valparaiso on the opening day of the Motor City Cup, being played at Mission Inn Resort. Mission Inn will host the 2020 Horizon League Championships later this spring as teams get an early preview of the course through the two-day, three match Motor City Cup.
The Jaguars defeated Detroit Mercy 4.5-1.5 in the morning round and beat Valpo 4-2 in the afternoon. Head coach
Jamie Broce's squad will take on Creighton for the Motor City Cup title on Monday (Feb. 10).
In the morning, IUPUI got resounding wins from
Marion Debove at the No. 1 spot and
Reece Malapit at the No. 6 spot, while both
Kara Blair and
Nicole Howard needed all 18 holes to claim their wins. Blair won 1-up at No. 3 over UDM's Julia Shaw and Howard won 2-up at No. 4 over Shana Murphy. Junior
Amelie Svejda played Kendall Payne to a draw at No. 2 while sophomore
Annie Eisenbarth was defeated at No. 6, 6&5.
Against Valpo, Svejda blew past her opponent, 7&6 while Blair and Malapit went all 18 holes in victory. Debove and Howard halved their matches to help seal the victory.
Both Blair and Malapit ended the day with two victories while Debove, Svejda and Howard all collected 1.5 points apiece.
"Today I kept my speed with my putting aggressive and confident, which helped out in the end because I was making more and leaving my misses close," Blair said. "My driver and short irons were solid for the majority of the day as well."
IUPUI will face Creighton for the title after the Bluejays defeated both Northern Kentucky (6-0) and Oakland (4-2) on Sunday.
