INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI golf teams swept the Horizon League's Golfer of the Year Awards as senior
Austin Crowder was voted the Men's Golfer of the Year and junior
Marion Debove was chosen as the Women's Golfer of the Year. In addition, head coach
Jamie Broce was voted the Men's Golf Coach of the Year by his peers and both
Nick Bienz (first team) and
Amelie Svejda (second team) were voted all-league.
Crowder was the league's best player in the regular season, registering a 71.92 stroke average and five top-10 finishes, highlighted by a win over a tough field at the Chatham Hills Collegiate. At that tournament, he carded an 11-under 205 (68-69-68) to earn co-medalist honors. He also earned a runner-up finish at the Zach Johnson Invitational with a 2-over 215 (74-72-69) and a ninth-place finish at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate with a 3-under 213 (72-73-68). Crowder was the Jaguars' low man in four of his nine tournament entries and defeated 83 percent of his foes this season. He also had a team-best 12 rounds of par or better during the regular season. It marks Crowder's second career all-league berth as he was voted second team All-Summit League following his sophomore campaign in 2017.
On the women's side, Debove was similarly impressive, recording a 74.00 scoring average and six top-10 finishes among her nine tournament entries. She collected medalist honors at the season opening NKU Fall Classic by carding a 1-under 212 (73-71-68) and later won the Braun Intercollegiate as well at 146 (70-76). She carded a school record single round of 66 at the Kiawah Island Spring Classic on Feb. 26 and her season opening 212 at NKU also represented a new school record. She defeated 92 percent of her opponents this season and carded seven rounds of par or better. Debove, who joined the Jaguars at the turn of the semester last season, collected her first career all-league berth.
Broce, in his second year at the helm of the program, was voted the league's men's Coach of the Year by his coaching peers. Broce's Jaguars boasted the league's top two players in Crowder and Bienz and collected a tournament win and six top-10 finishers. The Jaguars cruised to a win at the Butler Spring Invitational and later collected a runner-up finish in the Wright State Invitational. The Jaguars enter the league tournament as the top ranked team by both GolfStat and Golfweek. Under Broce's tutelage, Crowder (71.9) and Bienz (72.2) are on pace for the two lowest single-season scoring averages in IUPUI history and the team scoring average of 299.3 in just the fourth season in school history under 300.
Bienz earns his second straight all-league spot after being voted to the league's second team a year ago. Bienz was brilliant in the spring portion of the season, winning medalist honors at both the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate and Butler Spring Invite. He carded a school record 54-hole, 13-under 203 (68-68-67) to win by three strokes and followed up by winning the Butler event by two shots with a 36-hole 137 (64-73) at Highland Country Club. Bienz is ranked No. 2 in the league by both GolfStat and Golfweek and enters the league championships with a 72.16 scoring average. Bienz ranked second on the team with 10 rounds of par or better and four top-10 finishes.
Svejda collects All-Horizon League honors for the second straight year after closing the regular season with a 76.65 stroke average and two top-10 finishes. She was runner-up at the Dayton Fall Invitational with a 36-hole 158 (83-75) and shot a career-best 54-hole 221 (70-76-75) at the EKU Colonel Classic en route to a ninth-place finish. Svejda had two rounds of par or better this season and shed more than strokes off her scoring average from a season ago.
Both the men's and women's teams will begin the Horizon League Championships on Sunday (Apr. 21) at Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
