WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The IUPUI women's golf team will have its final regular season tune-up this weekend when the Jaguars participate in the 2019 Lady Boilermaker Classic at Purdue's Ackerman-Allen Golf Course on Saturday (Apr. 13) and Sunday (Apr. 14). The tournament is slated for 54 holes over two days and will be scored in six-count-four format. Play on both days will begin at 8:00 a.m.
IUPUI is playing the event for the first time since competing in Purdue's Ladies Midwest Shootout in April 2009, carding rounds of 354 and 343 to finish ninth of 11 teams.
Head coach
Jamie Broce has been shuffling the deck throughout the spring with injuries touching nearly every member of the squad. The Jaguars recently got good news though as sophomore
Nicole Howard registered a runner-up finish at the Otter Creek Intercollegiate while playing as an individual, carding rounds of 78 and 71 last weekend in her first action of the spring. Howard was returning from an injury that had sidelined her since January.
She will rejoin the lineup, which has been solid this spring with junior
Marion Debove and sophomore
Amelie Svejda leading the way. Svejda earned a top-10 finish at the Colonel Classic two weeks ago with a 54-hole 221 (70-76-75) and Debove was just behind her at 13th overall at 223 (75-71-77). Senior
Elizabeth Orr ended the tournament at 240 (79-81-80) and freshman
Kara Blair finished at 249 (79-84-86). Sophomore
Reece Malapit carded rounds of 75 and 74 around a round in which she had to withdraw due to an injury.
Debove continues to dazzle with a 73.86 stroke average while Svejda has been excellent as well at 76.53 for the season. As a team, IUPUI sits with a 310.29 scoring average for the year, which includes a tournament victory.
QUOTABLE: "I felt very good and confident today overall. My irons were solid and gave me a lot of opportunities for birdies. I just tried playing one shot at a time and staying as positive as I could. This tournament has definitely lifted my confidence and I am very excited for what's to come the rest of my season. My number one priority right now is being the best golfer I can be for my team to help us get another conference title," Howard said after this past weekend's Otter Creek Invitational.
FORMAT: Teams will compete in 54 holes, spanning two days. Saturday's first of two rounds will begin at 8:00 p.m., as will Sunday's final round. Scoring will be six-count-four format.
