Box Score 2 FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – IUPUI had two different offenses show up at the plate as the Jaguars split their games on the first day of the Razorback Invitational hosted by the University of Arkansas on Friday (Feb. 22). After only managing one hit in the opener, the Jags pounded out a season-high 11 hits in the nightcap.
Drake 5, IUPUI 0
IUPUI's offense was shut down by Drake starter Nicole Timmons. IUPUI managed just one hit by
Delainey Turner and struck out a season-high 13 times, including seven strikeouts from the first three spots in the order.
The Jags managed to draw five walks, including three by
Jaida Speth, but only put a runner on second twice in the game. In both the fourth and seventh innings, IUPUI got a runner in to scoring position but both times it came with two outs and the Jags could not get a rally going, ending the inning in the next at-bat.
Drake got on the board early after a single, stolen base and another single brought home the first run. Later in the inning, catcher
Sabrina Trevino was called for interference on a stolen base attempt that allowed the second run of the game to come across.
The Bulldogs added to their lead in the fifth inning after a two-out walk and a two-run home run doubled the lead.
Starter
Dezirae Leonard (0-3) picked up the loss, being charged for all five runs and allowing six hits. Leonard allowed six walks and struck out one batter.
IUPUI 11, SIUE 8
The Jags rebounded in game two on the day with the offense exploding for 11 runs against SIU Edwardsville. It is the second time this season IUPUI has scored more than ten runs in a game after not hitting double-digits on the scoreboard all last season.
10 of IUPUI's 11 runs came in the first three innings and starter
Lexi Lucas did enough to hold off the Cougars to preserve IUPUI's third win of the season.
IUPUI quickly began the first inning with two outs sandwiching a walk but a single by
Kristin London started a rally for head coach
Elisabeth Beirne's squad. London's single was followed by a single from
Mandy Dallas that brought home
Delaney Thompson.
Sabrina Trevino then doubled to score London and make it 2-0.
McKenzie Loge walked to load the bases and Jaide Speth delivered the big blow with a bases-clearing double that put IUPUI up 5-0.
After SIUE scored an unearned run in the first, IUPUI got two back in the second with
Haley Ginger driving home
Emily Berrisford on a double and Dallas doubling home Ginger two batters later.
IUPUI began the third inning with two singles and
Delainey Turner was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Berrisford then reached on a fielder's choice to score Loge and after Thompson reached on a fielder's choice,
Haley Ginger brought home two more runs on a ground out to second.
SIUE started to climb back in to the game in the fourth plating two more unearned runs, capitalizing on more IUPUI errors. The Jags finished the game with five errors and four of the eight runs scored by the Cougars ended up unearned.
In the top of the fifth, Ginger hit her second double of the day to drive in her team-high fourth RBI to give the Jags their 11
th run.
From that point on, IUPUI needed to hang on as SIUE plated two in the sixth on a two-out two-run home run that cut the lead to five. In the seventh, a single and a triple to start the inning made the score 11-7. After a line out, the Jags fifth error of the day brought home SIUE's eighth run. Lucas managed to stem the tide and get a fly out and a ground out to close out the game.
Eight Jaguars finished with hits on the day and Ginger, Dallas and Speth each had multi-hit games. Speth finished the game with three RBI for the first time in her young career.
Lucas improved to 3-4 on the season and has won three-straight starts. The freshman again did not walk a batter and struck out four, throwing 97 pitches with 73 being strikes.
