SOFTBALL HEADS TO GEORGIA SOUTHERN FOR WEEKEND TOURNAMENT

IUPUI will play five games in Statesboro, Ga. over the weekend as the Jags look for their first win of the year.

STATESBORO, Ga. – The IUPUI softball team will head to warmer weather over the weekend as the Jaguars will take part in the Eagle Round Robin hosted by Georgia Southern on Friday (Feb. 15) through Sunday (Feb. 17).

IUPUI will be looking for its first win of the season when they take on UMKC, Georgia Southern, Mount Saint Mary and Morehead State. The Jaguars and UMKC will play twice during the tournament after already playing once in the first tournament of the season. UMKC came away with a 12-5 win in that game.

Through five games this season, Delainey Turner leads the Jags at the plate, hitting .400 (6-for-15) at the Total Control Sports Invitational. Turner also finished with one double and two RBI. The biggest run producer was catcher Sabrina Trevino who hit .375 with a double and a home run while driving in three.  Delaney Thompson pounded out two doubles and hit one of the Jaguars two triples over the past weekend.

In the circle, freshman Lexi Lucas saw the most action, making three starts and throwing 18.2 innings. Lucas struck out nine batters but allowed opposing hitters to hit. 325. The Jaguars will look to lower a team-ERA of 9.53 over the tournament.

SCOUTING REPORT
UMKC
2019 Record: 2-3
The Roos come in to the weekend with a 2-3 record having beaten Western Illinois 9-1 in their last game at the Total Control Sports Invitational. UMKC beat IUPUI earlier in the tournament, 12-5, scoring eight runs in the final two innings after the Jags took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Chyanne Onstad led the way for the Roos in that game with five RBI and Sydney Garcia went 5-for-5 in the leadoff position.

The offense for UMKC has been prolific, with the team hitting .321 and scoring 31 runs in five games this season.

In the circle, all three pitchers have under a 2.40 ERA and a combined team ERA of 1.53. They are allowing opponents to hit .184.

GEORGIA SOUTHERN
2019 Record: 4-3
Georgia Southern fell in its last game to Mercer by a score of 5-4 in a midweek matchup. On the season, three Eagles are hitting .400 or better with Mekhia Freeman leading the way, hitting .500. Shelby Wilson is on fire at the plate as well, hitting .444 and leading the team with two home runs and 10 RBI.

Ashleigh Morton leads the team with a 2.88 ERA but holds a 1-2 record on the season. Rylee Waldrep is 2-1 this year but has a 4.04 ERA.

MOUNT ST. MARY'S
2019 Record: 0-0
The Mountaineers will begin their season at the Eagle Round Robin and are coming off of 17-26-1 2018 season. The Mount was picked to finish seventh in the Northeast Conference Preseason poll. This will be the first time that IUPUI has played Mount St. Mary's.

MOREHEAD STATE
2019 Record: 0-4
Morehead State dropped all four of their games at the Phyllis Rafter Memorial Tournament in Kennesaw, Ga., to kick off the season. In three games of play, Princess Valencia leads the team with a .625 average (5-for-8). The Eagles hit .155 as a team and drove in just seven runs over the four games.

Lakyn Largent logged the most innings for Morehead State, throwing 10.1 innings and holds a 5.42 ERA after giving up eight runs in her three appearances.
