IUPUI KICKS OFF HORIZON LEAGUE TOURNAMENT AGAINST YOUNGSTOWN STATE

The No. 6 seed Jags will play the No. 3 seed Penguins in the first round of the Horizon League Tournament.

Chicago, Ill. – IUPUI earned a spot in to the Horizon League Softball Tournament in its first year in the league and will begin play in the tournament on Wednesday afternoon (May 9). The Jags are the No. 6 seed and will take on the No. 3 seed Youngstown State Penguins at 3:30 ET/2:30 CT.

The game against Youngstown State will be televised on the ESPN+.

Head coach #Elisabeth Beirne#'s squad put together a 10-13 Horizon League record while overcoming injuries to the pitching staff and out in the field.

Senior #Delilah Wright# leads the Jags on offense with a .339 batting average overall and has upped that during conference play, hitting .375 in 23 Horizon League matchups. #Mandy Dallas# has showcased her power in conference play, hitting eight of her 10 home runs during the conference season and drove in a team-high 24 runs against conference opponents. Dallas also finished the conference schedule second on the team with a .310 batting average.

The Jags will have to count on strong performances in the circle from #Megan Overton# who appeared in 18 of the 23 conference games and made 16 starts. Overton threw 15 complete games and compiled a 10-7 record and 2.72 ERA. Over her 105.2 innings pitched in Horizon League play, Overton struck out 95 batters and only allowed opponents to hit .219.

AGAINST YOUNGSTOWN STATE
IUPUI began its conference season traveling to Youngstown State and took two of three games against the Penguins. Both wins for the Jaguars were 2-1 victories as Overton dominated the Penguins batters winning both of those games. For the weekend, Overton went 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA, allowing just 11 hits in 14 innings pitched and striking out 17, including 10 strikeouts in the first game of the series.

On offense, the Jags only managed four runs in the series as Wright drove in one run and #Sabrina Trevino# drove home two. Dallas finished the weekend leading the team with three hits.

SCOUTING YOUNGSTOWN STATE
Youngstown State finished the regular season with a 14-10 record in Horizon League play. The Penguins are led by Lexi Zappitelli who hit .402 on the season and rove in 20 runs on two home runs. Against the Jags, Zappitelli hit .667 with six hits, and two solo home runs.

Yazmine Romero is second on the team with a .392 batting average. Stevie Taylor and Nikki Saibene are tied for the team lead with six home runs and Maddi Lusk drove in a team-high 34 RBI.

In the circle, Paige Geanangel led the team with a 3.21 ERA and holds a 12-11 record. Elle Buffenbarger is second on the team with a 3.42 ERA for the season and led the team in strikeouts with 119.
