Box Score ROCHESTER, Mich. – Riding the arm of its ace, IUPUI softball picked up a 2-0 win in the first game of a three-game series against Oakland on Friday (April 20).
 
"I think the team stayed within themselves and didn't worry about anything else," said head coach #Elisabeth Beirne#. "We were making good contact, it was just at people and we found the hole at the right time."
 
IUPUI (13-25, 9-9 Horizon) got another stellar performance in the circle by sophomore #Megan Overton# who threw her fourth complete game shutout of the season. Overton struck out 10 batters, reaching double-digit strikeouts for the third time this season. She also only allowed four hits and walked four batters.
 
"I just have to keep my spins going, that is what I have to do to get my pitches to break," said Overton. "I'm not worried about speed right now, I just have to get my pitches spinning and let the defense do their job."
 
"We are a little thin in our pitching staff right now and she goes out there and doesn't need to do anything more that just her job, which is get ahead of batters and throw her pitches," said Beirne.
 
IUPUI did not get its first hit until the fourth inning, when the Jags stranded two runners but the defense and Overton's pitching kept Oakland off the board.
 
The Golden Grizzlies put a runner on third with one out in the first but Overton got a strikeout and line out to end the threat. Oakland left two runners on in the second after another swinging strikeout.
 
Oakland looked to threaten again in the fourth, getting a runner to third with two outs but a groundout to third kept any numbers off the scoreboard.
 
The Jags finally broke the scoreless tie in the top of the sixth. #Delilah Wright# singled to second base and #Haley Ginger# ripped a triple to the wall in right center field to bring home Wright. It was the first triple the Jags have hit in their last 12 games.
 
Ginger then put the Jags up 2-0, scoring on a single to left by #Mandy Dallas#.
 
Again, Oakland had a runner get to third, this time in the bottom of the sixth, and once again, Overton got a strikeout to end the frame.
 
IUPUI and Oakland will meet for a double header on Saturday (April 21) beginning at 1 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN3.
