INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI women's tennis earned its first home win of the season with a 4-3 win over Butler. Earlier in the day, the Jags fell to Bowling Green by a score of 7-0.
"Today was a total team effort," said head coach
Marisa Arce. "I'm so proud of the team for the improvement they've shown this season. Butler was coming off a couple big wins, and our girls matched their confidence and energy."
In the first match of the day, the Jags (3-3) were overpowered by Bowling Green (4-1). The lone win of the day came in the doubles where the team of
Valeriia Lavrenchuk and
Krystal Grubb won 7-5 at the No. 1 spot to remain undefeated as a duo.
Lavrenchuk had the most competitive match of the singles competition, falling in two sets 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).
The afternoon proved to be much more fruitful for IUPUI as they took down cross-town foe Butler (3-6).
After losing the No. 2 doubles spot, 6-0, IUPUI bounced back getting a 6-0 win from Lavrenchuk and Grubb. It came down to a tie-break in the No. 3 doubles match for the point and
Marina Schneiger and
Molly Nguyen came out on top with a 7-6 (7-4) win.
In singles, Lavrenchuk grabbed a win at No. 1, 6-4, 6-3 to put the Jags up 2-1. Nguyen moved IUPUI one point closer with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5. IUPUI captured the match with a win by
Mariella Pessina at the No. 3 spot as Pessina won a three-set battle 6-3, 5-7, 6-1.
"Every member of the team played a vital role in the win today," said Arce. "We have a couple of days off and look to get back to work next week."
IUPUI will be off until Saturday, Feb. 17 when they travel to take on the University of Indianapolis.
