INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI men's tennis team picked up a win in its first home match of the season, beating Belmont 4-3 on Saturday (Jan. 20). The Jags fell to Dayton on the road 6-1 on Sunday (Jan. 21).
IUPUI (1-2) picked up its first win of the season in a close match against the Bruins. In the doubles competition, IUPUI won the first match at the No. 2 spot with the team of
Ethan Mardanus-Budiono and
Jac Newis picking up the 6-1 win. Belmont would battle back and take the doubles point winning the No. 3 match, 6-4, and the No. 1 match 7-6 (7-5).
Belmont jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the match after a 6-3, 6-0 win in the No. 3 singles match but IUPUI would tie the match up at two with wins by
Bradley Luetschwager at the No. 4 spot (6-3, 6-4) and
Michael Koch at the No. 6 spot (6-4, 6-0). Newis gave the Jags their first lead in the match winning the No. 1 singles match 6-3, 7-5. Mardanus-Budiono closed out the match for IUPUI with a 7-5, 6-4 win at the No. 5 spot.
On Sunday, IUPUI traveled to Dayton to take on the Dayton Flyers and did not have as much success, falling to the Flyers 6-1.
Dayton swept the doubles matches with the team of Luetschwager and
Kyle Whittaker losing the closest match at the No. 1 doubles spot, 6-4.
In the singles matches, Luetschwager continued his strong weekend with a win at the No. 4 spot, 7-5, 6-4.
Sean Bailey took his match to three sets but was not able to get the win, falling 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
The Jags next match will be back at home at the West Indy Racquet Club on Friday, Jan. 26 at 1 p.m. against Eastern Illinois.
