EUGENE, Ore. - IUPUI senior
Robert Murphy will continue to take the program to new heights this week as the Indiana-native will compete in the NCAA Division I Championships, beginning on Wednesday night (June 7). Murphy will run the prelims of the 3,000m steeplechase at legendary Hayward Field at 8:02 p.m. Eastern (5:02 Pacific).
Murphy will run the first of two heats with the top five from each race advancing to the finals, along with the top two remaining times. The finals will be run on Friday (June 9) at 8:54 p.m. Eastern (5:54 Pacific).
Murphy, a two-time Summit League champion in the event, punched his ticket to Eugene with a third-place finish in his heat at the NCAA East Regionals in Lexington, Ky., two weeks ago. In that race, Murphy made a move with just less than 600m remaining and crossed the finish line in a personal best time of 8:44.91, lowering his own school record in the process.
There will be some familiar faces alongside Murphy in the night's initial heat, including MJ Erb (Ole Miss) and Troy Reeder (Furman). Erb defeated Murphy in the race at regionals in Lexington while Reeder is an Indiana-native and has run against Murphy numerous times, dating back to their high school careers.
Murphy's trip to Eugene began with a tour of Nike Headquarters in Portland, Ore., and will culminate with at least one race on the world's best known facilities.
"I think he's ready," IUPUI Head Coach
Chuck Koeppen said. "This is a dream trip for a college athlete, but I don't think he's satisfied by just going to Nationals. I don't want to put any undue pressure on him, but I would never count him out."
A full recap, results and photos will be posted to IUPUIJags.com immediately afterwards.
