OMAHA, Neb. – An unfortunate bump in the road for a team looking for its first win in Summit League play, the IUPUI men's tennis team (6-17, 0-2) was upended 2-5 Saturday at the hands of Omaha (8-10, 2-1) in an afternoon bout. The loss leaves the Jags with just four remaining meets, only two of which come against league opponents.
Despite getting a win at the No. 3 doubles, IUPUI couldn't seal the point, falling in the top two spots to give Omaha an early lead.
Marcus Nalley and
Jose Calero came out on top in their respective tilt, dropping John Ellis and Matt Dunn 6-2.
David Beasley had perhaps the most convincing showing for any Jaguar player on the day, as he made quick work of Matt Dunn, taking the No. 3 singles point 6-2, 6-4. Nalley followed suit at the No. 4, earning a 6-4, 7-5 win over Colin Buckley. Despite the strength of the middle of the order, no other Jag could take a point.
Jac Newis had one of the stronger showings in a losing effort, as he pushed his bout to three sets against Nathan Reekie at the No. 2. After losing the first set 4-6, Newis fought back for a clean sheet 6-0 win in the second. He pushed it to the edge in the third frame, falling in a heartbreaking tie-break, 6-7 (4-7).
With the loss, IUPUI will have a mid-week non-conference battle with Ball State Wednesday (April 12) in Muncie, Indiana, before hosting reigning Summit League champion Denver Saturday (April 15) at 12 p.m. EST in the West Indy Racquet Club.
