INDIANAPOLIS – A heartbreaking way to see their season end, the IUPUI men's tennis team (7-21, 1-3) came out strong against the four-time reigning Summit League champion Denver Pioneers (11-11, 4-0) Friday afternoon (April 28), dropping a tight doubles point 2-1 before falling 5-0 in the final score. The Jags were within a few break points of drastically altering the outcome.
David Beasley and
Bradley Luetschwager were terrific at the No. 2 doubles, as the duo picked up a team second-best fifth victory as a pair against All-Summit League selections Diogo Rocha and Jesse Ruder-Hook. From start to finish, the Jaguar tandem demonstrated balance in all aspects of the game, downing the Pioneers team 6-2. After a 3-6 loss at the No. 3, all eyes turned to court one in anticipation of the finish at the No. 1 spot, with both teams fighting for the early advantage. Making a surge back,
Jac Newis and
Kyle Whittaker pushed the match to 4-5 before eventually dropping the final game.
Dismissing to singles play across the six indoor courts at the West Indy Racquet Club, the Jags came closest to a victory at the the No. 4 singles, as
Marcus Nalley held a 6-3, 5-4 lead before his match ended due to the Pioneers getting the required points to win the meet. Beasley was also holding strong at the No. 3, narrowly dropping the first set 4-6 and trailing the second set 2-3 before the action was called off.
The loss brings to a close a 2016-17 season that started promising with some exciting moments during the fall season. Beasley caps 2017 as the Jags lone All-Summit League selection, earning the second of his career in addition to a Newcomer of the Year award during his freshman campaign.
