HILLSDALE, Mich. - The IUPUI men's track and field team made a splash on opening night of the Hillsdale 'Gina' Relays on Thursday (Apr. 27), keyed by junior decathlete
Paul Salee and freshman runner
Jacob Stamm.
Salee, the program's lone decathlete, topped his previous best long jump by nearly three feet while also throwing a personal best distance of 11.28m (37' 0.25'') in the shot put. His long jump of 6.25m (20' 6.25'') was sixth of the 10 competitors while he was fourth in the shot put. His 100m time of 11.60 was just off his personal best while he cleared 6' 2.25'' in the high jump. He ended his day with a time of 53.39 in the 400m event.
In the 5,000m, Stamm led the way, clocking a time of 15:00.49, placing 25th of 132 runners on Thursday night. He clicked off two miles worth of 71 second laps before falling off that pace just slightly down the stretch.
Joel Thompson ran a time of 15:29.60 and freshman
Liam Tansy, who ran the steeple at Illinois last weekend, ran a personal best time of 15:31.00. Fellow freshmen
Jarit Perkins (15:36.90) and
Takoda Potts (16:03.34) also clocked personal best times in the outdoor 5K.
"Stamm ran a really tough race tonight," IUPUI Head Coach
Chuck Koeppen said. "I know he'd love to get under 15 (minutes) and he will, but he did a really good job up here tonight."
The Jaguars will be back in action on Friday with events beginning at 9:00 a.m..
