INDIANAPOLIS – Through no lack of effort, the IUPUI men's tennis team (2-5) couldn't escape either of their weekend dual-meets with a victory, falling Friday (Feb. 3) to Dayton 2-4 and Saturday (Feb. 4) to Michigan State 3-4. With the swing of just a couple points, the Jags could've easily turned either loss into a victory.
On Friday, the Jags couldn't come up with the doubles point following a 4-6 loss at the No. 2 spot. The valiant effort put forth by
Kyle Whittaker and
Steven Christie came up just short, as it was a set decided by a mere few points. The No. 3 doubles match went unfinished as the Jags fell at the No. 1, 1-6.
In singles play, Christie and reigning Summit League Player of the Week
Bradley Luetschwager came up with victories for their respective team at the No. 3 and 6 spots. Christie topped Bernardo Sanson 6-3, 6-4 followed by Luetschwager cruising to a 6-2, 6-3 win over Andy Druffel.
Saturday was likely the most tightly contested fight the Jags have seen yet this season, as the Jags opened up the evening strong by winning the doubles point. Luetschwager and
David Beasley were strong out of the No. 1 spot, besting the Spartans 6-3. Christie and
Marcus Nalley followed suit, earning a "W" with a 6-4 set at the No. 3 spot.
Unfortunately, only Nalley and Beasley could battle their way to wins in singles play, as Nalley picked up two out of three sets in tie-breakers at the No. 3 spot. Beasley bested Ivan Rakic with one tie-breaker, 6-2, 7-6 (4) at the No. 4 spot. Whittaker had one of the most thrilling yet gut-wrenching matches of the day, as he fell to Colin Harvey 5-7, 6-7 (2) at the No. 6 spot.
With the losses, the Jags will look to next weekend, as the team hosts Eastern Illinois Saturday (Feb. 11) at 7:30 p.m. EST in the West Indy Racquet Club.
