JAGS SQUEAK PAST CLEVELAND STATE, 4-3

IUPUI improves to 4-5 this spring with home win over the Vikings

INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's tennis team used its depth to edge past Cleveland State, 4-3 at West Indy Racquet Club on Friday (Feb. 17). After yielding the doubles point, the Jaguars recovered to win the bottom four singles matches to get past the Vikings.

The doubles points was nip-and-tuck with the IUPUI pair of Bradley Luetschwager and Jac Newis winning at the top spot, 6-4. However, a 7-5 loss at No. 2 and a 7-6 (12-10) defeat at No. 3 gave the initial point of the day to Cleveland State.

CSU also won the top two singles matches in straight sets, but the Jaguars outgunned the Vikings at the bottom of the lineup to steal a non-conference victory.

Freshman Steven Christie won the clincher at No. 3, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-1 after a marathon first two sets. Junior David Beasley overcame a rough first set to win at No. 4, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 and in doing so, collected his third consecutive singles win and improved to 5-4 for the spring season.

Senior Marcus Nalley extended his personal winning streak to six with an emphatic 6-4, 6-2 triumph at No. 5 and Luetschwager won 6-0, 7-6 (5) at the bottom spot. Both Nalley and Luetschwager improved to a team best 6-2 in singles play this spring.

The Jags will continue a busy weekend with a pair of matches in Tennessee the next two days. IUPUI will face Austin Peay at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 18) and Belmont at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday (Feb. 19).
