INDIANAPOLIS – Despite what was an otherwise strong showing from the IUPUI men's tennis team (2-3), the Jags came up just short in their attempt to defeat cross-town foe UIndy (1-0) Wednesday (Feb. 1), an NCAA Tournament team from a season ago. The Jags fell by the score of 4-5.
Playing in accordance with Division II tennis rules, given that the University of Indianapolis was the host team, eight total points were up for grabs, as doubles play was worth three points instead of the traditional one. The Jags were able to lock up one of those points, as reigning Summit League Player of the Week
Bradley Luetschwager and
David Beasley teamed up for an 8-5 win at the No. 1 doubles spot, dropping Arklon Huertas Del Pino and Andrea Morlet in the win.
Kyle Whittaker and
Steven Christie came incredibly close to a victory in the No. 2 double spot, come up just short in a 7-9 defeat.
Luetschwager kept up his clutch play from this past weekend, continuing to prove tough when it matters. The big junior came through with a win at the No. 6 single spot, dropping James Weatherhead 6-4, 7-5. Teammates
Jac Newis and
Marcus Nalley joined him in the win column, as both players fought tooth-and-nail for their respective victories. Newis topped Christoph Drechsler in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, at the No. 2 spot, while Nalley took out Marco Razo 6-3, 7-5 in the No. 5 spot.
Beasley demonstrated strong, determined play at the No. 4 spot, going the distance before falling late. The Greenwood, Indiana-native captured the opening set 6-4, but saw set number two slip away, as he fell 2-6. Pushing it to the edge, his opponent, Magnus Mueller, did just enough late, taking the final set 4-6.
With the loss, the Jags will look to bounce back this weekend, as the team hosts a pair of dual-meets against Dayton Friday (Feb. 3) and Michigan State Saturday (Feb. 4).
