CHICAGO, Ill. – After picking up their first win of the season on the previous day, the IUPUI men's tennis team (2-2) capped its busy weekend with another victory, defeating Chicago State (0-6) 6-1 Sunday afternoon (Jan. 29). The Jags win evens their record on the season, as the team will return to Indianapolis for their next five meets.
The Jags earned five victories in singles play while also winning the doubles point. Perhaps the most exciting bout of the day,
Marcus Nalley squeezed out a hard-fought victory against Gonzalo Martinez at the No. 4 spot, winning by scores of 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4). Nalley and doubles partner
Kyle Whittaker also earned a win in doubles play on a walkover victory.
David Beasley and
Bradley Luetschwager blanked the opposition in doubles play out of the No. 1 spot, as the tandem defeated Martinez and Christian Gonzalez 6-0. Beasley was also masterful in singles play out of the No. 3 spot, defeating Rohan Wattley 6-0, 6-1. Luetschwager earned a win on a walkover.
Jac Newis capped the afternoon for IUPUI with a sound win over Felix Savard as the No. 1, reigning victorious 7-5, 6-3.
The Jags will now return to Indianapolis Wednesday (Feb. 1) to face the University of Indianapolis in an away meet before hosting four in-a-row at the West Indy Racquet Club.
