INDIANAPOLIS – An extremely daunting task to begin the regular season, the IUPUI men's tennis team (0-1) opened up the 2017 spring schedule with a 0-7 defeat at the hands of Northwestern (4-0) Sunday (Jan. 22).  The 13th ranked program in the nation, Northwestern features a talented roster, which includes the 26th ranked player in NCAA Division I men's tennis.

Playing out of the no. 1 spot, Jac Newis was tasked with facing the 26th ranked Strong Kirchheimer, and performed admirably in defeat.  Newis fell 2-6, 4-6 in the tough matchup.  Newis then teamed with Matt Moe for doubles play, as the duo fought to a 3-3 draw that went unfinished.  The Jags lost the previous two doubles sets to give the doubles point to Northwestern.

Bradley Luetschwager went deep in his first set against Brenden Volk in the no. 6 spot, dropping the battle 5-7.  He'd go on to lose the second set 1-6.  Jose Calero also battled hard in a 3-6, 4-6 loss to Dominik Stary in the no. 3 spot.

The Jags will continue their season-opening road trip next Saturday (Jan. 28), as the team ventures to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to battle Marquette and Cardinal Stritch.  The team will follow with Chicago State the following day before playing an away meet against the University of Indianapolis Feb. 1.

This offseason, the Jags were tabbed third in the Summit League preseason polls, expected to finish behind reigning champion Denver and Oral Roberts.
