OMAHA, Neb. - The IUPUI men's tennis team remained undefeated in Summit League play and atop the league standings with a hard fought 4-3 win at Omaha on Saturday morning (Apr. 9).
IUPUI (9-18, 4-0 Summit) opened play by seizing the doubles point and followed by splitting the six singles match to win for the sixth time in nine matches.
"We played another tough match on the road against a conference team today," IUPUI Head Coach
Brandon Currie said. "It was a quick turnaround after having a match the night before, but the guys stepped up when needed and we came away with the win. We didn't play our best today, but we found a way to get it done.
"I have to give a lot of credit to Omaha for how they competed as well. All in all, I'm proud of what our guys have done so far, but we know we still have work to do."
The Jags opened with wins at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles, offsetting a loss at No. 3. The pair of
Bradley Luetschwager and
Kyle Whittaker fended off the Omaha (10-13, 1-2) No. 1 duo by a 7-5 count, just after
David Beasley and
Akshay Verma had wrapped up a 6-4 win at No. 2. From there
Matt Moe and
Louis Sacks dropped tiebreaker 10-6, resulting in a 7-6 loss that kept the Jags from a doubles sweep.
Singles play was tight throughout, including a pair of matches that went three sets.
Verma made quick work of his opponent at No. 4, winning 6-2, 6-4 to give the Jags a 2-0 lead in the match and extending his personal winning streak to five.
Jac Newis and Whittaker came off at virtually the same time, one following a win and the other with a loss. Newis won at No. 1 6-3, 6-4 while Whittaker was dumped at No. 6, 6-4, 6-4.
The Jags needed just one of the three remaining singles matches to complete the win, but were forced to sweat it out. Despite winning the first set, Luetschwager fell 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 to Erik Anderson at No. 5 and Beasley was defeated at No. 2, 7-5, 6-4.
However,
Marcus Nalley came up huge in his third set, defeating Alex Woodward at No. 3, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.
IUPUI will head west again next weekend for a pair of matches, beginning at Northern Colorado on Friday, Apr. 15. The Jags will cap the two-game trip at Denver on Saturday at 1:00 p.m..
