SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The IUPUI men's tennis team captured a key road win on Friday afternoon (Apr. 8) at South Dakota State, winning five of the six singles matches to claim a 5-2 victory over the Jackrabbits. The victory pulled IUPUI into a tie for first-place with Denver, both at 3-0 to start Summit League play.
"We played a tough match against a very competitive conference team," IUPUI Head Coach
Brandon Currie said. "I give credit to SDSU for playing great doubles today, but our guys stepped up to the challenge and played a high level of singles. We showed a lot of grit today and we came away with a big win for the program."
After dismal doubles play put the Jaguars in a 1-0 hole, IUPUI (8-18, 3-0 Summit) regrouped and responded in singles, authoring wins at every spot but No. 3 singles.
The top of the lineup was spearheaded by
David Beasley's 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 1, while
Jac Newis defeated Emerson Styles, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2. It was Beasley's team-high 13th singles win of the season and 11th during the spring season. The reigning Summit League Newcomer of the Year is now 7-3 in his last 10 singles matches.
Junior
Akshay Verma earned his fourth straight singles victory to even his record at 7-7 on the year, drilling his opponent 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.
Bradley Luetschwager collected a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 5 and freshman
Kyle Whittaker won a three-set match at No. 6, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-5). He and opponent Chuck Tang played a 10-point third set tiebreaker as the outcome of the match was already decided.
The victory was the Jags' fifth in the past eight matches, but the first road win of the season. The Jags will cap the two-game trip at Omaha on Saturday morning.
"We've got some guys who are banged up, but we have to show some grit and find a way to get it done again and hopefully play for a conference title next weekend," Currie said.
A full recap and results of Saturday's match will be posted to IUPUIJags.com immediately afterwards.
