INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's tennis team dropped its 2016 home finale on Wednesday afternoon (Apr. 6) by a 5-2 score to in-state rival Ball State at West Indy Racquet Club. IUPUI collected the doubles point and a singles win from junior Akshay Verma to account for the team's scoring.

Despite the final 5-2 margin, the match wasn't decided until the final three courts wrapped up, all in a matter of roughly 20 minutes.

IUPUI (7-18) took the early lead by claiming the doubles point behind wins at the bottom two spots. David Beasley and Verma won 6-4 at No. 2, just moments after Patrick McAuley and Matt Moe concluded a 6-4 victory at No. 3.

In singles play, Ball State (8-10) took control, capturing the top three matches in straight sets. Beasley fell 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 3 spot and Jac Newis was unsuccessful at No. 1, 6-4, 6-0. Marcus Nalley lost a tight match at No. 2, 7-5, 6-4.

However, the bottom three matches all went three sets, leaving the outcome in limbo nearly three hours deep into play.

Verma kept the Jags in the match with a 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 victory at No. 4, but Ball State got the needed fourth point when Marko Guzina fended off Jose Calero in a testy dual at No. 6. Guzina won the opening set 6-3 before Calero rallied for a heated 6-4 win in the second set. However, Guzina recovered to win the final set, 6-1.

Meanwhile, at the opposite end of the courts, BSU's Patrick Downs upended Bradley Luetschwager in a battle of big servers. Luetschwager won the opening set, but lost back-to-back sets from there.

The Jaguars will be back on the court this weekend when they play back-to-back Summit League matches on the road. IUPUI will face South Dakota State on Friday before then playing at Omaha on Saturday.
