OMAHA, Neb. – The IUPUI men's tennis team fell to Oral Roberts in the first round of the Summit League Tournament on Friday (Apr. 29) in a deceiving 4-0 sweep. The loss ended IUPUI's season at 10-20 while ORU will move on to Saturday's championship match.

The Jags dropped the doubles point to start the afternoon as ORU claimed the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles wins. Junior Akshay Verma and sophomore David Beasley led 4-3 at No. 2 doubles before the point was determined.

The second ORU point was earned at No. 3 singles as Beasley fell 6-3, 6-3. With a 2-0 deficit, junior Marcus Nalley reeled off a lengthy first set win (7-5) looking to put the Jags in good shape.

Jac Newis and Verma played long first sets as well, but fell 7-6 and 7-5, respectively. Verma hung around but dropped his second set 6-4, giving ORU a 3-0 lead.

The timing may have given the perception of a blowout but narrow margins throughout the first few finishes were unkind to the Jags.

The afternoon concluded with sophomore Bradley Luetschwager clawing back to force three sets at No. 5 singles. Luetschwager dropped the first set 6-0, but rallied to win the second 7-5, forcing a decisive third. However, he surrendered the fourth point, and the match, to ORU.

Freshman Kyle Whittaker and Nalley were each headed to third sets at No. 6 and No. 2 singles, respectively, when the match was decided. Those two, along with Newis, ended up unfinished, resulting in the 4-0 loss.

IUPUI won the regular season meeting between the two schools, 4-3 in Indianapolis in a similarly tight match. IUPUI trailed that match 3-2 but rallied to capture the final two singles matches, and ultimately the decision.

IUPUI will graduate just one senior in Louis Sacks. Sacks won three matches in singles play this season. He compiled an 8-3 singles record and a 3-3 doubles record in his freshman season. Head Coach Brandon Currie's squad will return the All-Summit League duo of Newis and Verma, along with Beasley, who was the league's Newcomer of the Year in 2015.
