Video HighlightINDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's tennis team collected a crucial Summit League win on Saturday (Apr. 2), upending Oral Roberts 4-3 inside West Indy Racquet Club. IUPUI claimed the always critical doubles point and split the six doubles matches to improve to 2-0 in Summit League play.
Oral Roberts slid to 2-1 to start league play.
"It was a big win for the program today," IUPUI Head Coach
Brandon Currie said. "The guys found a way to step up when it mattered most and showed a lot of grit and determination. We knew ORU would compete at a high level today and we were ready for the challenge. This was a big win for our program and I hope we can continue the momentum into next weekend and the rest of the season."
In doubles play, IUPUI was solid at the top, getting wins from
Kyle Whittaker and
Bradley Luetschwager at the No. 1 spot and a convincing win from
David Beasley and
Akshay Verma at No. 2 to take an early 1-0 lead. The point proved to be decisive as singles play was tight throughout.
Luetschwager waltzed to a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles, but ORU (10-9) collected straight set victories at Nos. 2, 3 and 5. With the other two matches splitting sets, the result came down to
Jac Newis at the top and Verma at No. 4.
Newis rebounded from a sluggish opening set to capture a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 win and Verma did the same, rallying for a 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory. Newis won for just the fourth time this spring at No. 1 while Verma collected his fifth singles win of the season.
It was the Jaguars first win over the Golden Eagles since March 2012.
IUPUI will cap the home schedule on Wednesday afternoon (Apr. 6) when the Jaguars host Ball State at 1:00 p.m. at West Indy.
