DENVER - No. 51 Denver proved to be too tall of a task for the IUPUI men's tennis team on Saturday (Apr. 16), outmanning the Jags 7-0 at Lifetime Fitness to capture The Summit League regular season title. IUPUI moved to 10-19 overall and 4-1 in The Summit to finish second in the regular season standings.
Denver (15-7, 5-0 Summit) coasted in doubles, capturing the top two matches, before moving on to singles play.
In singles action, the host Pioneers won five of the six matches in straight sets with the only barn burner coming at the top spot. Sophomore
Jac Newis took his opponent to the brink at No. 1 singles, before falling 6-3, 6-7, 1-0 (10-3).
Junior
Akshay Verma had his singles winning streak snapped with a 6-4, 6-4 loss at No. 4 singles, while freshman
Kyle Whittaker lost a tight decision, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.
The Jaguars will now turn the focus to The Summit League Tournament, which will be played in Omaha on Apr. 29-30. The winner will earn the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
