FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Needing a win to hold their place in the Summit League standings, the IUPUI volleyball team (11-15, 7-4) will head just up the road to do battle with Fort Wayne (11-15, 7-5) Tuesday (Nov. 1) at 7 p.m. EST in a rematch of the thrilling five-set match from just a couple weeks ago. The Jags were victorious in that match after trailing 0-2.
Currently sitting in third place in the League standings, the Jags are just behind Denver (10-2) and South Dakota (10-1), while tying with North Dakota State at 7-4 in League play. This season, IUPUI has received breakout performances from multiple players, including
Abby Boatman, who leads the Summit League with 1.13 blocks-per-set. She's second overall with 98 total blocks.
Alexis Mapes is also a leader in the Summit League, averaging 9.63 assists-per-set, which ranks second.
Logan Walling leads all players in the League with 23 solo blocks.
The Jags are coming off a tough-fought loss to Denver on the road (Oct. 29), losing in five sets after trailing 0-1 and 1-2. Prior to that match, IUPUI was riding a five-match winning streak, which included victories over Omaha, Oral Roberts, Fort Wayne, and South Dakota State. During that time, the Jags picked up three Player of the Week awards, including two defensive awards for Boatman and one for Mapes.
Fort Wayne is just behind IUPUI in the Summit League standings, threatening at 7-5 in League play. After losing in five sets to the Jags, the Mastodons have since gone 2-3, topping Western Illinois and Omaha before losing their last three matches. One of those losses came against South Dakota State, whom the Jags recently dismantled in a strong straight-set sweep. Standouts on the 'Dons roster include Nicole Rightnowar, who ranks second in the Summit League with 346 kills. Madison Jaqua, the setter, leads the Summit with 968 assists.
All-time, the Jags are 18-23 when facing the Mastodons. IUPUI has a six-match winning streak against Fort Wayne, dating back to Nov. 23, 2013. The Jags faced the Mastodons on Nov. 1st one time in program history, a four-set match during the 1988 season that went in favor of Fort Wayne.
Once again chasing IUPUI history, Walling has already established a new career-high this season with 23 solo blocks. Currently at 71 solo blocks in her career, she's within striking distance of the all-time record of 76, set by current coach and former All-American
Kaitlyn Hickey from 2012-15. Her career .277 attack percentage currently ranks eighth in the IUPUI record books. Against South Dakota State, Walling tied a career-high with four solo blocks, replicating a feature she hadn't accomplished since facing South Dakota on Sep. 29, 2013, her freshman season.
Walling set the all-time total blocks record earlier this year, and currently has 407 for her career. Tracy Bailey is second with 375.
Other players with a chance to cement their name in the history books include Boatman, who has 98 total blocks on the year. She's one away from tying the 10th best finish for a single season in program history, a mark of 99 set by
Monica Suding in 2007. Her 1.13 blocks-per-set is the third-best in IUPUI's history, just behind a pair of performances from
Bethany Fogler during the 2011 (1.17) and 2012 (1.24) seasons.
