MEN'S GOLF TEAM TO HEAD TO BETHPAGE FOR DOC GIMMLER INVITE

54-hole tournament to be played on Sept. 12-13

9/10/2015 11:55:00 AM

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - The IUPUI men's golf team will continue its busy start to the fall season this weekend when the Jaguars participate in the Doc Gimmler Invitational at Bethpage Red this weekend. The tournament will begin with 36 holes on Saturday (Sept. 12), followed by Sunday's final round (Sept. 13). The course is set to par-70, 7,014 yards and the field will include teams from Army, Colgate, Columbia, Harvard, Johnson & Wales, St. Thomas Aquinas, Yale and host St. John's.

Head Coach John Andrews will take a veteran laden group of four seniors and a sophomore to the event.

Senior Rylan Porter is off to a magnificent start to his senior year with a team-best 69.80 stroke average and two top-10 finishes. Porter shot 206 (68-69-69) at this tournament last year, also earning a top-10 finish. Classmate Austin Winings has also been solid at the year's start, carding a 72.60 stroke average in five rounds played.

"I feel comfortable with our team going up there. It's a ball strikers course and all of us are pretty good ball strikers," Winings said. "You can get real comfortable with the course easily. The holes that are real tight, you don't have to hit driver and the holes where you have to hit driver are not as tight.

"We've always played pretty well up there too, so I think that'll help us."

Sophomore Jackson Juerling is third on the squad in stroke average in the early going at 74.40 and is followed by Bryce Very (74.50) and Tyler Davis (75.00).

"I think our guys will be confident because we've always played fairly well up there," Andrews said. "It's not an easy course by any stretch. It's certainly not as long as a lot of courses we'll play, but it's not easy. There are opportunities to score on this course and you have to take advantage of those opportunities.

"I think our guys are ready and excited about the opportunity to go out and play again."

Winings has played this tournament each of the past two years, carding 215 as a sophomore and 220 a year ago. Davis will also be making a return trip to Bethpage as he shot 221 there in 2013.
