INDIANAPOLIS - IUPUI played two games on Sunday (Sept. 27) at Butler against Southern Illinois and the host Bulldogs. The Jags tied the first game 5-5 in seven innings against SIU, and fell to Butler 3-0 in game number two.
Southern Illinois got off to a quick start against the Jags scoring three runs in the first inning and starter
Brooke Boetjer was only able to get two outs before being pulled. IUPUI left the bases loaded in the bottom of the first but struck back with two runs in the second.
Down 3-2 in the fourth,
Maggie Good delivered with a three-run triple to the center field wall to give IUPUI a 5-3 lead. In the top of the fifth the Jags committed two of their three errors in the game which allowed SIU to tie the game at five.
"There were times we looked like a really good ball club," said head coach Amanda Rivera. "Then there were times we got a little lackadaisical. Its exciting when you see those bursts of greatness but we have to figure out how to do that for 14 innings."
IUPUI did not manage to put a runner on base the last three innings but did catch a runner stealing home in the top of the sixth and forced a double play in the top of the seventh to keep the score tied at its final mark.
The second game saw a much stronger Boetjer in the circle for the Jags. Boetjer went five innings only giving up one run on three hits while striking out two. Unfortunately for the Jags, the bats did not back up Boetjer's performance. IUPUI only managed two hits off of Butler starter Kristin Gutierrez, one each by Good and
Sarah Lawrence. The Jags did have one chance in the third but two bases loaded strikeouts ended the only threat IUPUI had. Butler added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth for the final tally of 3-0.
"[Brooke Boetjer] had a rocky start in the first game but she's going to come back, she's that kind of fighter," said Rivera. "We just have to figure out how to score some runs for her."
IUPUI has two more games in their fall exhibition schedule, a double header against the University of Indianapolis at UIndy on Friday, October 9th with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
