WESTFIELD, Ind. - The Jaguars kicked off their fall exhibition schedule with three games on Sunday (Sept. 20). IUPUI lost its first two games of the day to Purdue, 2-0, and Evansville, 5-3, before finishing the day with a 3-1 victory over Marian.Â
"We switched a lot of things around and put people at a lot of new positions so it was nice to see what they can do," said head coach Amanda Rivera. "After the day you have to think, we have a lot to work on. That is good because this is when we put our work in for the season."
In the first game, starter
Brooke Boetjer gave the Jags four strong innings only giving up one unearned run while striking out six Purdue batters. IUPUI had a chance to tie the game at one in the fourth inning but had a runner thrown out at home. In the fifth inning, the Jags had runners on first and second but were not able to drive the runners in. Purdue added a run in the fifth for the final tally.
Game two saw the Jags face off against Evansville.
Nickole Finch started the game for the Jags and worked her way out of a bases loaded, no out, jam in the first inning to keep the Purple Aces off the board.Â
The Jags struck first in the bottom of the first on a RBI double by
Maggie Good and added another run in the second off an
Ashley Ousley single. Evansville took a 3-2 lead in the fourth, but IUPUI responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at three. Evansville plated two more in the top of the sixth to win the game 5-3 despite being outhit by the Jags 13-8.
In the final game of the day IUPUI beat Marian 3-1. The Jags got off to a strong start in the bottom of the first with a two-run, RBI double from Good and added another run in the bottom of the fifth when
Sarah Lawrence hit a sacrifice fly to drive in
Ali Mosier. The Jags used three pitchers to stifle the Marian bats allowing only one run and giving up three hits while striking out six batters.
"I don't even look at the scoreboard in the fall," said Rivera. "We are just putting kids in and out and if we did [look at the scoreboard] we would have never made any changes. We want to give our freshman a little experience and get the jitters away so by the time the season rolls around they're not freshman anymore."
IUPUI continues its fall exhibition schedule on Sunday, Sept. 27 when they take on Southern Illinois at 1 pm and Butler at 3 pm at Butler University.Â
